Traditional Terrace Garden, SW19

Wimbledon terrace 2.jpg

This technically complex project involved building a garden over an underground garage, so loading constraints were similar to a roof terrace. Consequently, the majority of the garden had to be constructed over the void, using raised planters.

The client wanted a large terrace for entertaining house guests during the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, with pretty, cottage-style planting to suit the style of the house.

A grey porcelain tile was used for the terrace, with planters constructed from London yellow stock bricks, to match the house exterior. Artificial lawn was the practical solution over the concrete roof of the garage and slatted cedar fences allow wind to filter through on this slightly exposed end of terrace site, where a solid fence might risk being blown over.

The client requested a pretty planting scheme with lots of flower colour and a blue and yellow palette. The challenge was to ensure year-round interest and to introduce some evergreen structure to extend through the seasons.
