A spacious garden for a large detached house in West Putney, the brief was to create a 'grown-up' garden for both parents and teenagers to enjoy.

The play equipment was removed from the end of the garden and replaced with a contemporary garden building where the children can play pool, darts and hang-out with friends. A yew hedge partially screens the building from the rest of the garden and gives the space an identity of its own, with white bark birch trees, woodland planting and a deck area with informal low seating and fire bowl.

Closer to the house, two terraces wrap around the new extension and create specific areas for dining and lounging. A striking, sandstone clad water feature links the two spaces and repeats the low rectilinear form of the garden building.

A long, straight path leads from the terrace to the rear garden and creates a strong focal point from the house, punctuated by a specially commissioned Purbeck stone sculpture set on a plinth.

​

Planting combines soft grasses and perennials for year-round interest, while strong clipped forms, including hornbeam columns and yew hedges give structure and reflect the geometry of the hard landscaping elements.

​

Three multistem Amelanchier trees bring softness and privacy to the large dining terrace and offer a sculptural quality and changing vista year-round.
